God Cares Welcomes Students Back

10/21/2020

On Thursday, October 15th, the doors of God Cares Primary School and High School reopened for three levels of students returning for their National Testing. The students are excited to be back, and so are the teachers and administrators. It was a happy reunion!
Now, it is back to the business at hand for these three groups of students must begin preparing quickly for National Exams that will happen in a few months. The Primary 7 (like 8th grade in the US) and S4 (4th year of high school), and S6 (6th year) will be studying in the classroom and in the new dorms as they prepare for their exams. There are guidelines in place for the reopening of both schools. We are so blessed to have our teachers and staff return and are so grateful that we have been able to keep them all on payroll during the lock down throughout Uganda due to our sponsors' generosity.

All other classes will return to school sometime at the beginning of 2021. The exact date will be decided and announced by President Museveni in January.

Please pray for our students, whether in school or out, as they adjust to the challenges of this season. Pray that their eyes would be steadfast on the Lord and help them through the trials they are encountering. The food distribution will continue for our student families who need help in the slum areas while they await school to open.
We will continue to carry out our mission to offer love, hope, and a future through education and discipleship…one child at a time.

Sponsors Stand in Faithfulness

4/30/2020

As we continue to endure this season of separation, we see God clearly at work through many of you! Our sponsors and donors are standing firm in faithfulness in their giving, and it has resulted in keeping the ministry stable during these uncertain times. Some of you had even stepped forward to give extra for food for the students' families who are homebound in the slums, and others who are doing well at this time have intentionally given more to make up for others who are not able to give.

One long time Buyamba sponsor, Jason Fielder, explained, "My wife and I are both teachers and blessed to have a job right now, and we can give more as others maybe can't right now, so just give us another child to sponsor!"
We have heard great stories from talking to our sponsors during this time. Long term sponsors whose sponsored children have graduated from Primary School to High School or graduated from the university have reported the long-term blessing of sponsoring their particular child. As Kelli Green recently explained, "We're so proud of Juma. It's been so rewarding to watch him grow. We still have all the pics and letters he's sent us. That very first pic we saw when we sponsored him when he was five years old still breaks my heart."

Bill and Debbie Lees asked for a new younger child to sponsor after their current child graduated from college. They said they have been so blessed being involved in the process, "We kept every letter, report card, and picture of Deborah ever sent, and now we have completed that journey with her and she is empowered to go into her new stage of life."

Leaving Exams 2019

P7 Leaving Exams
Every year, before The Uganda National Examinations take place a dedication service is held to pray for the P7 students of God Cares. All parents, God Cares staff, and students are in attendance and they take time to recognize, their help comes from God. Florence Dongo speaks as well as Teacher Francis, the spiritual director at God Cares Primary School.
The week following the dedication service, our Primary 7 class spends two days taking their Primary Leaving Exams. We thank God for this large class of 88 students!

When a student successfully passes their primary leaving exam, he or she graduates to high school. Each year, God Cares School rises in the rankings of top schools in Uganda, and we believe this year we will once again receive high scores.
Students transferring to God Cares High School will need an additional sponsor if they are not already living at the school. Due to the location of God Cares High School, the majority of the students live at the school and therefore need a residential sponsor. If your sponsored child is in P7, please be praying for a second sponsor, or share the blessing of sponsorship with a friend, and let them know about this opportunity.
We are overwhelmed by the sheer number of students that are moving through God Cares Schools, receiving a quality faith based education. They are being empowered to impact their nation for Christ!
The final term of school comes to a close on November 29, 2019. The S6 students of God Cares High School, as well as the S4 students, are preparing to take their national exams. S4 students take what's called, "O-level exams" and this determines whether or not they will proceed to S5 and S6 for further education or continue on to a trade school or enter the workforce. S6 students take, "A-level exams" and this decides whether they will have the opportunity to continue to a university, college, or some other form of higher education. Test results will be released in the late summer of 2020.

There are thirty seven students in this year's graduating S6 class and all of them have been praying about what God would have for their futures. Thanks to each of their sponsors, they have been granted the opportunity of education, which encourages them to dream and hope for a bright future.

If you're sponsoring an S6 student, we would ask that you also join us to pray that God would give each child His vision for their future. Please pray for them to stay on course with their studies and walk in faith through the season of waiting until the test results are released.

Does the Sponsorship Journey End Once My Student Graduates High School?

No.... our mission is to offer love, hope and a future through education and discipleship ... one child at a time. If a student wishes to continue their education beyond high school, we want to fully support them! Buyamba  strives to cover a student's education from nursery to university. If a sponsor continues his commitment of $35 a month, we can continue to come alongside that child. We may need to add a couple of additional sponsors to a student if a particular university requires more. A given institution could require fees that would equate to one to three sponsorship(s) of $35 a month. A degree can take up to three years to obtain.

We also have a University Scholarship Fund where an individual, church, or business can create a scholarship in their name for $3,900 - the cost of three years of schooling for the most popular university with the Buyamba students, The Buyamba Scholarship Fund will be available to students with top scores, good behavior, good attendance, and a demonstration of good leadership. What does Taco Bell have to do with God Cares School?

9/26/2019

Plenty!

In 2015, Brent Flynn, a Taco Bell franchisee that operates restaurants throughout California, decided to sponsor 26 children for each of his 26 Taco Bell stores. He did this in honor of his good friend Mike Benson who passed away. Buyamba sent each of the restaurants a picture and short bio of a God Cares School student, and each store manager put it up on their employee wall so the staff would have the chance to be involved in helping orphaned and needy children in the Buyamba program.
Each store also receives the monthly newsletter, student letters, and annual photo that is shared by all. Brent reported, "Some of the store managers get really into it, and the staff reads the letters and have actually written back to their child."

This idea was not only a great example of Buyamba Creative Giving, but more importantly, Brent believed that this gift would help honor a man whom he admired so much. He explained, "Mike's genuine passion and joy in serving Jesus and helping those in need continues to be a great example for my family and me. Having visited Africa on mission teams with church, Mike was especially passionate about Buyamba and the children of God Cares School. It has been a natural extension to share that joy and passion with our restaurant teams."

This giving model has been so successful that Brent and his team have continued to sponsor all the kids every year since then! Not only that, they have increased their sponsorship numbers as they have acquired new restaurants. Today, they sponsor 33 children in the Buyamba program, and two of their sponsored children have graduated high school and gone into universities. Tracy has now entered Makere University Business School, and Enoch has almost completed a three-year program at Kabale School of Nursing and Midwifery. Brent and his team continue to support part of their tuition through the Buyamba program. They have decided to keep sponsoring these past few years together for they believe they are called to children in desperate situations wherever they are and as Brent said, "To be a father to the fatherless."

University Student: Suzan Kwagala

1/30/2019

Susan Kwagala is currently enrolled at Africa Renewal University, pursuing a degree in Child Development.
Suzan Kwagala
Susan was raised by a single mother who could hardly afford a daily meal at home, Buyamba started helping her since Primary three (Grade 3) class. She comes from one of our bush communities called Buwama (in southwestern Uganda). Susan has experienced a lot of hardships in her education journey to the point of giving up, given the fact they couldn’t afford a casual meal and the basics at home. But while at school, she was encouraged by the teachers and the environment at school, which gave her hope to keep pushing on. After her S6 class graduated in 2017, she had passed her national examinations well, but she thought that was the end of her education journey since there was no hope at home... But now, she is the family’s pride, for she is the first child (and a “girl” at that) in the entire family to go University. She is giving hope to the girls in her community that it is possible to make it as a girl! She is a living hope.
Thanks to support from Christian Foundation of the West, Susan's tuition needs were covered for her first year of school along with nine other women. The video below shares the student's hearts for Uganda and how they  are being empowered to one day impact Uganda.
